Abstract: This thesis attempts to capture the temper of English life in 1596 through the medium of its extant printed works. It examines all of the extant printed works from that year in the fields of religion, the arts, education and learning, government and topical publications against the general background of the English Renaissance and the particular background of English life in 1596.
