Abstract

In this study of Sights at the Circus, I analyze Angela Carter's critique of the literal, figurative , and theoretical "cages" in which the system of patriarchy encloses women. I appropriate the three phases of Elaine Showalter's paradigm of a female literary subculture as a starting point for my own feminist analysis: the feminine, the feminist, and the female.
