Abstract

"Previous research reveals that some women might pursue university education as a means to heal from experiences of violence, poverty, and trauma or to take control over aspects of their identity that have been sublimated by oppression and systemic inequities. This qualitative study explored eight women's motivations for and experiences with education at a mid-sized university in Ontario. This study also explored the possibility that women might be motivated to pursue university education as a means to heal from experiences of violence, trauma, and gender subordination, and if so, whether this motivation was fulfilled. Finally, this study documented the institutional and personal supports that women found beneficial to their experiences as students."--abstract.
